Went to Axminster Basingstoke yesterday, somehow managed to get out without buying too much.
Bought a new bowl gouge as my current one has gotten to the point the jig sits beyond the flute, a thin parting tool and a couple of diamond sharpening cards.

You did well to be so restrained ;)
'Fortunately' Axminster opened the Basingstoke branch 2 months after we left

I spent an hour in the High Wycombe branch last week and came home lighter in the wallet than when I went through the doors 🤣. Only wanted to have a look then decided i must have shiny new toys to play with 😂. That's the problem it's all to shiny!!!

I wanted to buy more, having killed a bowl gouge in 1 year using the 80g white wheel I need to upgrade to a CBN wheel but couldn't remember what size I need for my grinder, could easily ha e bought more gouges and scrapers but decided to wait until I actually need them.
Have to say though, it didn't have the same feel as walking around Yandles.

Picked up what I think is a bargain today, an Axminster twin vac dust collector complete with a bag of tubing and a few other bits and pieces, £125 for the extractor and £20 for the other bits which are a couple of books, some screws, food safe oil and a big bottle of meths, now I've got to rethink my lathe position in the maker space again so I can fit it in, it's almost double the size of the Hoover I've been using

Just eyeing the Meths up. A great mixer with sherry. Sad but true, in my first year of teaching one of the pupils mother was a near blind alcoholic on that beverage.

Might have been more judicious to hide the sharpening book.
So, you are going to begin turning chess sets ?
No, I've only read the first few pages but I believe the chess pieces are just a reference to one of Bill Jones' jobs before setting up for himself.

Sooooooo I'm a little excited, a friend has offered me Record bandsaw, the RSBS14, this will replace my current (useless to me) Black and Decker benchtop saw, it looks in great condition and he has a few spare new blades and is asking for £150, having looked around and seeing it going for £300+ this seems like a really good deal 😁

Only a little excited? :)

That's a brilliant deal. Once you've got it you'll wonder how you managed without.

I'd recommend a copy of Mark Duginske's (spelling?) Bandsaw book

having a decent bandsaw is transformational - it is a joy to have a decent fence and a bandsaw that cuts straight - I only have the little record power one (sabre 250) but that was still a huge step up from my previous toy one...

My shoulder is getting a bit dodgy so using a handsaw constantly is taking it's toll and takes a lot of time, my little bandsaw is fine for small stuff under 50mm but it's a pain to tension and get the blade to stay on the wheels.

I've had the same extractor since 2001 and hope I'm not tempting fate when I say it's still going strong now.

I love it apart from a bit of a bang and spark at the switch when I switched it on yesterday, I suspect there's a bare cable so will need to open her up and check.

Solo I'm a very happy boy now, my friend has just dropped off my new (his old) bandsaw with 2 new blades and a new belt and a little compressor that he says is fairly quiet (for a compressor), the bandsaw is immaculate, not a scratch on it (for now 🤪) I had spent all yesterday cutting my worktop back for the bandsaw to have a space to sit and hoped I had cut it back enough, turns out it's an almost perfect fit with plenty of access to the schools gas supply 😁 just need to sit a bit of ply under it as the table is just resting on the worktop, not quite sure where I'm gonna put the compressor but it it needs a very good clean up before anything else.
A few questions if i may 😅
- my friend doesn't have the owners manual for the saw and I can't find one online, would anyone have one or know where I can download one? I have emailed RP but no response yet.
-having never owned a compressor before or had much dealings with one is there anything I should be aware of in regard to use, maintenance and the initial clean up I need to carry out? I also need to look at tool/equipment for it as it's o it the unit I've got, no lines or anything.
