Thread resuscitation time. The drill has sat in a state of being apart (but mainly cleaned and painted) in the garage for well over year. After kicking the casing and cursing a few times I've decided to get back on with sorting it out. The motor is the last major part. I had taken it apart and fitted mostly new bearings, but I'm thinking that this might be wasted work, and I should just get a new one. The wiring might be a bit iffy and should be redone, but I can't work out how this would be done.
Thoughts? Is this dodgy or will it be fine?
The motor did work before I took it apart, however it doesn't have a capacitor so was started by spinning it. I'm fairly sure I have photos of how the wiring was connected so I can put it back together ;-)

Well Toby T, I'm no expert on motors (you need Bob Minchin - aka 3 fingers or something - of this parish for that - and there are a couple of other knowledgeable members too). But to my relatively inexperienced eye, the wiring doesn't look too good to me - E.G. 1, that red? lead coming out of the top looks like the insulation is starting to crack, and; E-G. 2, the 2 black wires "inside" the motor (for the brushes?) don't look too clever either! But the main thing is the insulation of the windings, both on the rotor and inside the housing (field coils). If that insulation is gone/going (and it's hard to know without decent insulation resistance tests) then you're usually looking at quite expensive repair/s.

Assuming the pillar drill is intended to be a long-term user for yourself, personally I'd be inclined to put a new motor on.

BUT I suggest you wait for more knowledgeable members to come along before your final decision. That shouldn't take too long.

If you have put in new bearing you could take the motor to a motor rewinding specialist?

Or you could fit a Chinese motor of unknown quality or a decent guaranteed motor?

Cheers James
