Evening all
After weeks of working on substandard tools with the romantic notion that I can take them and turn them from old rustbuckets into workers that will turn me into the worlds greatest woodworker, I got sick of spending all my time on fixing and none on woodwork.
So with that in mind I decided to buy some tools that would let me work straight from the off, so I bought myself these (Veritas LA BU Jack and BU Block planes) and am very happy with my choices. I know there are many people who prefer LN, but in all honesty I tried both and was equally impressed so it came down to aesthetics and I personally prefer the look of the LV's.
I took pics with shavings. I know how much you lot like your shavings There are a couple of close ups of long grain shavings of English Oak at 0.001" and short grain shavings from the same board taken with the block plane.
The short grain shavings on the worktop are around 0.007" and the ones in the plane mouth are too fine to measure because although they are true shavings rather than dust, they crumbled when I tried to open them up.
Blade backs were perfectly flat on arrival (quick couple of passes over 800 waterstone proved this) so a quick sharpen in the Charlesworth stylee (Great DVD, thanks Mr C  ) and 3 coats of paste wax on all non painted metal (buffed to a lovely sheen) and I was away.
Anyway, off to bed now to dream of shavings.
Cheers
