Hi

I'm new to woodworking and this forum.

I'm looking at buying a Jet JSS-16 Bench Top Fretsaw and was wondering if anyone had come across this model and if it was any good.
I'm looking to make Jigsaws and boxes and will be using the saw on thickness of wood up to 40mm mainly Oak and Pine.

Hi Doug

Welcome to the forum :) .

I've no experience of the Jet fretsaw so I can't help there, unfortunately. Perhaps someone will be along later who knows more about it. It looks rather generic, like so many other brands of fretsaw on the market. Which other machines have you considered?

Most saws can cut through 40mm timber comfortably, but make sure you get some decent blades. Those supplied with your saw are not likely to be good quality. A quick search on the forum should provide you with plenty of links to blade retailers.

hi doug

welcome

now i got the jet for my first saw and what a big mistake.it lasted me 3 weeks i think when things started to go wrong.the clamp system uses allen key that rounded off in the first week, then the bolt that tightens up the clamp went not long after.the adjust ment is on the back of this and that compleatly fell apart after the 3rd week.it might just be me but i would give this a miss.

sorry

I,ve been using the Jet saw without any problems for the last 18 months. I did have the problem of the allen key rounding off on the top clamp when i first got the machine ( I suspect that other generic machines in this price range will have the same problem ) I solved this by getting a quick release clamp from Hegner for about £15.00 and it has made all the difference the existing clamp needs a small modification with a file and the addition of a small washer. Beware once you have altered the clamp you wont be able to use the pin type blades.

Thanks for the information, any suggestions on an alternative machine in the same price bracket.

I think you will find all saws are much of a muchness in that price range. A number of people here have the SIP and like it. If I was starting out right now, I would be inclined to spend a little more on a Fox . However, I cannot recommend either from personal experience.
