A certain planemaker known to many in these parts sorted my out with a genuine Phillyblade for Big Woodie (I lost the temper on the original one  ) from a bit of 6mm tool steel. Having done a bit of back flattening and honing this morning, it's taking nice long shavings in Big Woodie:

Many thanks Philly...as we all know, no pics or it didn't happen! - Rob

Work great, don't they.

Here's mine

24" Philly plane. It was originally the same shape as yours (at my request to Philly, I would add) at the toe, but I found it uncomfortable for long term useage, so I re-shaped the front end. Bit scary putting my Philly plane though the bandsaw, but it worked out great. The palm of the hand now rests on the hump at the front giving good downward pressure.

Cheers

Hi Karl,

Ive got an off topic question, did you put that vice together from two single screws? Something like this one from Axminster:

Cheers!

Hi Mikey

It is the Veritas twin screw vice. The advantage it has over using separate screws is that the twin screw can be linked via a chain (which mine isn't) so that the turning of one handle automatically turns the other. At the moment I have to turn both handles to open the jaws.

I've had it on my bench for about a year now, and it has been great (even with those MDF jaws  ). I keep on meaning to replace them, but other things just get in the way.

Cheers
