Well it looks like I am going to be in the market for a new SCMS after my burglary. Has anyone got any suggestions for a 10/12" model with a budget of about £200? Can't buy the old Power Pro 10" any more so got to go for another make/model. I know the De Walt, Kapex, makita are the best but just out of budget I am afraid.

Sorry to hear about the break in.

The SIP 12" model had a pretty decent review in Good Woodworking this week and I've seen it on eBay, brand new, for £200 or slightly less.

I've also seen another site selling them for the same money but with a stand included as well. Can't remember the name of the site though - but I'd imagine you already have a set up in place from you old saw.

Mailee, I do not know if you would be willing to go secondhand, but IMHO one of the best value for money SCMS on the market is this one. http://www.ps-tools.com/catalog/product ... cts_id/335, with an induction motor it is also pretty quiet, so if you could find a used one it would be a good buy.

Now I came across this one from Axminster http://www.axminster.co.uk/product-Axmi ... -32404.htm
and except for the blade cover it looks like a clone of the KGS301. If it is, then at £232 it is a brilliant price..

Has anyone got one of these Axminsters?

Surprisingly there are not very many mitre saws with induction motors on the market.

Cheers

Mike

Sorry guys but I think you lost the point there. It is not a mitre saw I need but a Sliding Compound Mitre Saw. I already have an 8" mitre saw which I use for mouldings and small stock but I need to replace my Sliding Mitre saw with another big one. I would of course go for the large De Walt but at almost £600 it is a bit steep. I do have a radial arm saw but unfortunitely this isn't portable. I haven't had any SIP eqiupment and have just bought the cast iron table saw but not used it yet so no nothing about the quality of SIP. Thanks for trying though.

The ones I mentioned are sliding compound mitre saws, with 12" max cuts at 90, and they both have 10" blades. I thought that is what you wanted.

Oh well.

Cheers

I have the Axminster one - it is a gem! Very quiet, the brake is superb and the capacities are excellent for such a small footprint. Slightly underpowered for maximum capacity cuts (or I need a better blade  ) it is a lot of saw for the money.
Hope this helps
Philly :D

Sorry Mike, my mistake. I looked at the picture and the description of the Metabo and it didn't mention 'Sliding' I just assumed it was just a compound chop saw. I appologise.

Hi Philly, Thanks mate

As I said if that is a clone of the Metabo KGS301 then the value for money is brilliant, because the 301 is an excellent saw.

I have the the KGS300 which is the Elektra Beckum predecessor of the 301 (without the brake before Metabo took over), but I upgraded to the Dewalt DW718 because I needed a 12" saw with a much bigger cross cutting capacity.
That said I still wouldn't get rid of the 300.

By the way Mailee, I do not know what the score is with this company but this saw on Ebay seems a bargain if you are willing to spend a few pounds more.

ebay link

It is a small blade and not the size you asked for, but it still cuts 12" at 90 degrees which is the capacity of most 10" saws, and I have heard nothing but good reviews on it, so I thought it was worth as mention.

EDIT We seemed to have crossed over there Mailee. Certainly no need to apologize mate, you haven't done anything wrong  I just hope after all the hassle you have had we can get you a bargain.

Cheers

Mike

I had the big Erbauer SCMS that Screwfix sell for a while (sold now). It needed a bit of fettling but was excellent value, something like £150, and had an accurate laser sight built in

I can confirm I bought a drill from this company the tool was as new and marked dewalt refurb. I also had a crack in the carry case and they sent another straight out.

Hi again mailee, it,s badged under "power plus" go to www.toolstation.com and you will find it,s still on special offer, and that includes FREE delivery, good hunting, Rich.

Can't help you on that one Mailee but I do own a SIP 10in cast iron table saw. For the price I have found it pretty good, I have had some problems but the supplier corrected them ASAP.
The worst was the no load switch that didn't always switch off, a new one was supplied from stock and I gained the impression that it was a common problem.
I found that the front rail that the fence slides on soon began to mark from sliding the fence, so I fell back on an old trick and purchased a piece of felt from Boots the chemist and glued a piece under each end then soaked them in oil. Worked a treat.
A few weeks after delivery the first bolt ended up on the floor! I retightened every nut and bolt I could find. Sorted!

Hi again Mike , just seen the result from Madstad on the news , hope your not going to gloat, disappointedly yours,

Rich.

Actually guys I have been having a think on this one and am going to wait and see what the insurance company offer first. It is their policy to offer me an alternative to replace my saw with like for like but it is no longer available of course so I must go for another and can put more of my own money to it to buy a better one. I am looking at a De Walt and probably one of the big ones given that I do a lot of large projects (Gazebo) so may go for one from the site Mike C has provided on E-bay. Will let you know what I decide when I do. Thanks for all the help again guys.

Mailee, I think that is the way to go, good luck.
