Hi,i have just bought a
DEWALT DW621 PLUNGE ROUTER IN METAL CARRY CASE. for 104 quid(120 including postage) nearly new condition.
Have i bought a good one and have i got myself a bargain,i know it is a bit late to ask now i've bought it but the Mrs may be a little happier if i have got a bargain.

I paid £100 plus vat for a new one about 3 years ago, thought that was a good price.

Provided it is in good nick I think you've done alright.

The DW621K is an excellent router. I also bought the 8mm collet, so that I could use the stronger bits.

Best new price I saw last year was 140 inc. vat and carriage.

Thanks for the replies folks.

Now,any advice on a set of bits for the new router.

I would like an assortment of bits,good quality but bearing in mind they won't be used everyday (if only).

Sorry if you are getting bored with daft questions but i want to give this a good go as i used to love working with wood but it was always for somebody else.

You need to build them up as you go along buying as a job requires

But as you have convinced "Mrs" that you got a bargain keep looking at cutters and bid (presuming you bought of ebay) low if you get it its a bargain (if you can find a job for it) if you don't you did not need it :roll:

Hi Bonny

As you are starting to buy cutters I would strongly recommend that you buying only those with an 8mm shank. You get a much stonger cutter, 60% more steel in the shank, for the same money.

You will also need to buy an 8mm collet for the DW.

The Freud FT2000 is an excellent router - very nearly bought one myself a few months ago but ended up with a Trend instead. Check out some of the reviews on this forum. And at that price it's a steal.

Just bought a ft2000 from screwfix, thanks for the tip, have two of these routers fixed in router tables already, can't go wrong at that price.

thanks for the tip about the Freud at Screwfix. I just ordered one too. I can leave my DW625 full-time in my router table now, or perhaps vice-versa - I think the Freud fits my unilift too. At that price it is really genuine bargain buy.

Bonny - I would also buy router bits as you need them - if you buy a mixed set you end up with a fistful of cutters you never use. If you do however want to buy a decent mixed set, have a look at the boxed set from Wealdon. I bought my set from them several years ago now for about £90 though I would think they're a bit more now - very good quality cutters tho' - Rob

Colin, I'd swap your routers over, the dw 625 is a better router and a shame to fix it in the table. All my fixed routers are freud ft2000 and cope adequately.

First I thought I'd best say hello to Bonny who's thread this is and say welcome to the forum - I meant to in my last post but was flitting around and forgot. Sounds like you did ok with the 621. Isn't it a clone of the old Elu MOF 96? Mine's still doing sterling service and it's so old I've forgotten when I bought it (secondhand then).

I agree with what the others say about bits, buy good ones as you need them for a particular task. Wealden make excellent cutters and I find if I order at lunchtime one day they arrive at my office the next, so with a little planning you should never get caught out.

Have you thought about building a table for your router? There's lots of ideas and information here. I have both a horizontal and vertical table and just couldn't manage without them. Here's one:

Also, thanks for the comment Senior, I was thinking in that direction but my only reservation is that I use an eliminator chuck in the table on the DW, as it helps access in the Unilift, and I don't expect it will fit the Freud.

Yes it is, No load speed 10000-22,500rpm. Plunge depth 67mm. Weight 5.6kg.

I think that there is a new model around and I guess they're (Freud as well as Screwfix) clearing stock to make way for them.
