Regular readers of this forum will know that the UK Tools and Trades History Society, TATHS, has been running for over 30 years. In that time it has published hundreds of informative articles in its Newsletter and Journal. That's all ok if you are a member and can find which printed publication has the information you want, but it's not in line with the Society's mission of educating the general public about old trades and the tools they used.

So, for quite a few years now, PDF versions of some of their old publications have been freely available on their website and recently they have extended this to include all but the most recent issues. Downloads are listed, with summary contents, here

and here

That's all by way of an introduction.

However, I was posting in another thread about a Mitor brand plane. Just about the only research on this obscure company was published by the US Mid-West Tool Collectors Association in their "Gristmill" magazine in 2013. I knew of the article but don't have a copy.

Checking on the MWTCA website, I found that they have followed TATHS' example and are making all their back issues available to read online too, and now I have read the article I wanted.

As far as I can see, access is limited to an online flipbook format, but on the plus side, the contents are all searchable. More details are here

So get stuck in and find the answers to more obscure old tool questions than you ever thought possible!

This is the internet at its finest - making information widely available to all who might have use of it.

Worth remembering that TATHS is an entirely volunteer-run organisation, so the work to make this information available was done freely and not for material gain. Well done and thank you to those responsible! =D> =D> =D>
