Hi folks

Complete new starter from Newcastle area (Jarrow). I have no experience but I do have the will to learn!

I am looking for a new hobby, and crafting with wood has always interested me.

Does anyone know of any evening classes in the local area?

Many thanks :)
Stew

Also, is there a list of "beginners tools/equipment"? :)

And possible, simple first project...something which I could learn online/at home.

Hi Stew,

I live in Hexham, work in Newcastle and haven't found any local courses I'm afraid.

What sort of stuff are you interested in making?

If you want to go down the hand tools route, check out Paul Sellers' blog, his YouTube videos and his woodworkingmasterclasses site which has a free membership option. He has a series of blog articles called "good tools for cheap" which covers what he thinks are the basic tools you need.

I started doing everything by hand but have migrated to a mix of machinery and hand tools.

Cheers,
Mike

Hi Mike. Thanks for your reply.

I guess things like outdoor tables...TV stand? I'm not sure what level of skill is required!

Probably hand and power tools.

Cheers

Get some plans and have a go! Popular Woodworking magazine (American) have a couple of books on garden furniture. The one I have is called "Building more classic garden furniture" by Danny Proulx. The projects look pretty doable and don't require a massive workshop full of machinery which many American authors assume the reader has!

Hi Stew
Do what Mike said but check your local library first as they usually carry books on outdoor furniture as well as those on tools and techniques.
If you find a book that you like, it's worth considering a purchase then.

I'm just north of Morpeth btw

cheers

Check out Axminster Tools new store at the North Shields end of the Coast Road. They have several short courses and lots of books and tools to look at/buy

why waste time/money even searching for such courses? Get some plans/ Youtube is your friend as well for LOTS of stuff , see what stuff you would want to build first, think how its built and have a go at it.
Practice makes perfect, you will learn all things ONLY by actually doing the stuff not reading books/ sure it helps, but you have to do the stuff yourself as well...
Pick up used cheap tools off of ebay as you need and that's all there is to it..
A good handsaw, manual precission mitre saw, jigsaw and a sander is really all you need to start.

So you can concentrate on you're woodworking skills, sawing, planing and joints, it would probably be best to get a
book or set of plans of something simple you wish to make.
You're suggested garden table sounds like a good start.
When the cutting list and sequence is all done ready, you can concentrate on the tools and work, etc.
Its all too easy to end up disappointed by trying to take on too much all in one go.
Get in the library or Google for free plans and download if you're able.
Leave you're bank card with you're wife, should you ever go into APT on a course
Here's a link below, for some plans.

It would be nice not rubbish a Newby's request for help in starting out, tools and courses,
If This is the process that some wish to follow, and it is their choice.
It may not be you're way, as can be seen above, but banging something together seen on u tube is not everybody's
Way forward.
