New? LN 55 deg Frog

This seems to have come out with a very quiet fanfare? Not sure how new it actually is, but not seen anything about it in print/on line before.

Ordered mine from Axminster, and it seemed to lack about 25 thou of machining, so the mouth would not close less than this. Ax sent a second frog next day, but same result. I emailed LN with the full story (possible machining error in batch?), and they offered to send one over (gratis) from the US inspected by T L-N no less! Now getting lovely shavings through a mouth which just passes a 4 thou feeler gauge, should be tight enough... (You can in fact close the mouth up completely on the properly machined frog) Excellent service all round!

I'm surprised that the plane does not seem noticeably harder to push than with standard frog. Lots of room for my big hands, too.

They've been available for a while, in the US at least.
I don't know why they bothered with the 50 degree frog as the gain is minimal - 55 is a good step forward. It also doesn't require that much extra effort - try a plane with a 60 degree bed and you'll definitely notice it!

Perhaps after the 55 degree one they will release a 60 degree one as well - then collectors everywhere will feel that their collection is incomplete unless they own three frogs for each of their bench planes
