New lathe under £2k recommendations please

Hi,

I am looking for a new lathe, going to be doing a variety of work on it, from spindles for furniture through to bowls and vases. I want electronic variable speed and the ability to turn the headstock. I have been looking at the Axminster AWVSWL1200, which seems like quite good value, does anyone have any experience with it? Is there anything out there which is a lot better and within my budget?

That's only a minor problem, have a word with these guys

or you could do it much cheaper if you did the wiring yourself, it really isn't that difficult. You'd have an awesome machine, with change from £1500.

I have the short bed version of that lathe with electronic variable speed (bought from Blister) and it never lets me down!

All this type of lathes have 5 belt positions and each one can be used with a variable speed control knob

I mostly had the belt on number 3 pulley , gives average torque and average speed

I sent him a message about the speeds and had this reply

" Hi Spindle speeds are 370 650 1200 2000 and 2700 rpm

Each one can be finely adjusted with a knob "

as a non wood turner his description of the variable speed control is somewhat vague " Knob " :mrgreen:

I also have the shortbed version of this lathe, to turn something on one of these machines is a hole knew experience, i payed £750.00 for it and think i got a good deal.

It looks a pretty good lathe, but might be a bit overpriced by the guy at the moment, even if it is variable speed. You can get the Maxi 2 for under £2k if you look around with the bowl turning outrigger.

I am not sure if a fixed headstock is the right way to go for me as I was hoping to turn larger bowls in front of the lathe, rather than at the back, as i have limited space in the workshop.

I was pointed away from the round tubed Record lathes by someone else. Have you had any trouble with it?

The Maxi 1, also seems to have an attachment to turn in front as does the Apollo Professional, but none of them seem to be for sale at the moment.

Personally I am not a fan of round tube bar lathes ,
but the bars are solid not hollow and are very heavy ,
Quite a few members use the Record CL1 CL2 CL3 CL4 range of lathes and recommend them

The CL4 is swivel head and full variable speed and £100 off at the moments :lol:

Again its all down to budget

This is a nice lathe also , either bench mount of on a stand

I binned my XP :twisted: , took it to the local recycling center :wink:

Maybe mine was a pup but when I wanted to use the 5 year guarantee as it went wrong and kept showing fault codes on the display

I was kindly told by Record that the 5 year guarantee does not cover the electrical side of things

They also offered to sell me a new headstock assembly for £1100 , yer right , Bin

Hope yours does not play up
