Lord N.

Here in the States there's currently a lot of discounting of the old K-body clamp as the retailers get set for the release later this summer of the Revo version.

This might be just a rumor, but one poster on a U.S. woodworking site said that these new clamps will be fairly expensive, e.g. $45 (ca. 27 GBP) for the 12" size.

That said, I did think that the K-body was a significant improvement ove most older clamp styles, certainly over pipe clamps. They were expensive, but a good clamp is so nice to use -- glue up is the last time you'd want to be fighting your equipment.

Local Lowes has the 24" for about $30 this morning.

I'm curious as to the "country of origin for the new versions. Bessey has started doing a lot of sourcing to the Pacific Rim. I'm not disparaging tools made in that region, but if I'm going to pay a premium price for a tool, I want to know who is making it. Current K bodies have some made in Germany and others stating "assembled in US". This past year, Woodcraft had a "house series" of Bessey K clamps (colored green) that were a bit cheaper than the orange/red colored clamps. Remember that there were quite a few complaints about them too. Woodcraft advertised them as "Besseys" and the complaints did not differentiate between the two colored versions. Hope Bessey learned their lesson and I hope the new versions are just a re-design and does not include a move to cheaper manufacturing methods.

Average price here in the UK for the old 12" version is £29 ($60) including taxes. Now don't tell me what the discounted price is in the USA you'll ruin my weekend :(

   Oh Frank, if only that were true in any sense other than mathematically based on the exchange rate. Anything that's $45 over there is invariably £45 over here (and then some usually).
Like LN says, please don't tell us what the discounted price is, I'm depressed enough as it is with this terrible Bank holiday weather.

Those UK prices surprise me since you're much closer to the source of these tools. Is the upcharge all due to sales taxes?

Anyone know how much they sell for in Germany?

Well we do have Value Added Tax to add at 17.5% but that still don't add up to the difference you get them for in the USA and what we get them for in the UK.

IMHO I believe it's because there is only one importer in the uk and it's a stitched up deal that no one else can import them.

perhaps Frank can buy bulk , and then post on to respective customers at U.S prices of course......

I still think theyre looking more like the Jet version, or is it just me :?

VAT is 19% in Germany and the pound is down against the Euro(by 15%).

Still does not explain why we seem to pay more for our stuff though?

Here's a quick comparison. I checked Dieter Schmid (Germany), Amazon UK, and Lee Valley. Focusing on the 12" (300mm), K30, model of Bessey K-body clamps. This is the current discounted version. I didn't try to find the low prices in each country--perhaps someone in the UK will beat Amazon UK. Amazon US appeared to be sold out of the 12", but Lee Valley is generally competitive. I used the German language pages of Dieter's website to find the Bessey K body prices in that country. For the K30, 12", 300mm model:

Dieter Schmid...... 34 euros (reduced from 42.50)

Amazon UK......... 30 GBP (no sale indicated)

Lee Valley........ 34.50 USD (sale); 31.70 USD for 4+

It's remarkable how close the absolute currency amounts are, irrespective of the conversion rates.

Sad to say that the only surprise over here is that the sterling and dollar price aren't the same.

Cheers,

If the spec and QC is good, location is irrelevant.

That may (of course) be a big "if".

The best price I can find for the K30 is £24.95, from Tooled-Up.com. They also claim that price is discounted from £37.81, though I've never seen the K30 offered at that price.
