I just got back from the supermarket and I had purchased a packet of biscuits at £1.70. There were eight bisquits in the pack so thats over 20p each or 4 shillings old money.
My grandmother would die of something, I think her housekeeping was £1 per week just after war.

Two practical answers, assuming that you need biscuits

One - Go to Aldi or Lidl

Two - Bake them yourself. For details watch lasts nights backing program on BBC2

Simples!!!

You could even post your baking effort on the forum!

This is a fascinating site to play with (and useful when you have old woodworking catalogues)

inflation calculator

Anyone know of a site with historical median incomes?

Bugbear, That calculator makes me weep.

I inherited £5 in 1937, and it has suffered nearly 6000% inflation at todays value. ( I only spent it a few years ago when I closed down my Post Office saving book and that amount I had always left in over the years)

Clearly you spent that £5.00 on biscuits!!!!

Phil

Yes I purchased three packets of those biscuits so you could say my granddads legacy of £5 purchased those.

Someone has robbed me, I know, I know, both political parties have allowed and encouraged that inflation .

Just after the war though, there probably wasn't much to spend her £1 on apart from the basics and even those were rationed. When I was 'hatched' in the early 50's there was still rationing which didn't finish I believe til the mid 50's or so.
What's of more interest to me though is that at the time your gran had her £1 to spend, the general populace new nothing of obesity and may (referring to the pic below) have been at the healthiest it's ever been...

It's always possible that this poor lady has a medical condition that (at least) contributes to her weight problem....... :|
