You just have to use a bit of good judgement.
I don't use the thicknesser/planer at all on a evening, and during the day never more than 20 mins in one session.
The only two machines I use after 9pm are the table saw and band saw (induction motors) and even then in very short stints.
I am going to replace my metal garage door with a wooden insulated one eventually, so that should cut the noise down a bit.
If you are in garage that isn't directly adjoined to a neighbour's property (like mine) it is a lot better. The most annoying noise would probably come from DIY type noises happening within your house that was adjoined to a neighbour.
