I actually want the white line to measure 28mm, corner to corner, for the harlequin box, I suddenly remembered that the diagonal is longer than the square which I had estimated at 28mil (and 9 squares make 252 mm.)

So what size should the square be please?
 
no its 39.59mm

Sorry was just looking at the picture, saw the white line and the ?, didnt read the actual question Si is right.

you have to read these trick questions, rather than relying on the diagram!

whilst the white line would be 39.6mm if the sides were 28mm as indicated, the question was 'what would the sides have to be to make the white line 28mm?' - and the answer has been given (19.8mm)
 
DW, all you need to remember (or write on the wall) is the value of Sqrt 2= 1.414

The diagonal of any square is sqrt 2 times the length of it's side.

OK thanks all. I had to print this one out, my little head could not cope with all the changes. Switching over to tissue boxes.
