I've got a commission for a TV Stand, made out of 2" thick pine...

They want it to be natural as possible, what finish would you recommend?

I usually use a Satin-Matt Floor Varnish (can't remember the brand name), because it gives fairly decent protection, whilst retaining the natural character of the pine. Can you use oils on pine, if so any suggestions?

Thanks in advance for any help, Cheers _Dan :)

Hi - I think oils can make pine go very 'golden' depends if you want the 'swedish sauna' look.

I'm planning to use water based acrylic which seems to stop the yellowing somewhat - i've not used it much though i'm just a beginner!

I recently finished a cabinet for the lounge made from pine. Finished it with hard wax oil, the one made by chestnut IIRC. Gave a really nice finish, no discolouration of the pine, very easy to apply, a winner all around.

Richard Findley is on the forum, he did a special for us which is why I got it and very glad I did, have bought a couple more tins since then.

I faced the problem of matching modern pine door facings to old bar and batten pine doors. In the end I found that if I gave the wood an initial stain of well thinned down red mahogany and then light oak stain I got near enough the 'set honey' colour of the doors. I then did a wipe coat or two of matt poly, again well thinned down.

This avoided the all too yellow colour that most finishes seem to give pine.
