today i turned some of the horse chestnut slice (see blog entry more info)

this piece was going to be a tall bowl/vase which i hoped would have some dark wood at the bottom but it didnt turn out that way

here it is between centres

i roughed it into a cylinder

there was some very soft wood in the diseased dark wood, this was soaking wet and slightly smelly

i alterd my plans and turned the dark wood away leaving just enough to get my faceplate fixing (using longer than normal screws about 35mm)

here i have roughed out the shape, but left excess wood at the base for strength during hollowing

Well rescued George, it's not always obvious which is the most economical or satisfying rescue route.

looks beautiful george, how long will it be before you put a finish on it?
its had one coat of lemon oil today then the piece is allowed to dry, once dry it will get a few more more coats of oil.
