Having had a bad chest for 2 weeks, I haven't been in my workshed for abit, until this evening.

Bad news, ingress of water, right over the shelves where I had laid out my planes to see how big a tool cabinet I will need...

Rust and staining everywhere. It looks very orange in some places, so might be very recent? It rained very heavily last night. Or it could have been Saturday, when the storm took out the Sycamore.

So what is the best advice (apart from storing planes sensibly!)? I've given some them a quick abrade and then a coat of camellia oil - is there much else I can do?

There also seems to be a nasty mould present, but that's my wife's fault.

Matthew sells rust remover from Shield Technologies which looks good. No experience personally tho.

I may need that. I've got some citric acid, but it leaves the metal looking very dull. Does Matthew's stuff leave a good surface finish, or does it still need polishing?
I'm thinking some of those little fibre polishing wheels in the Dremel. The ones which are like Shredded Wheat. One of them is a Record 05 I only finished tarting up 2 weeks ago...

Anyway, that's tomorrow spoken for. Bloody annoying. And a new roof.

If its only a surface rust from a few days I'd go at with one of the rubberised abrasive Garryflex blocks, which should do it. You can get them from Axminster and I find them most useful.

They look great - I'm sending the order this evening! Thanks for the tip. Do they work well on refurbishing old and grimy stuff?

I guess the other message is get the cabinet finished...

Those Garryflex blocks work fine but be wary of the coarse ones - they can scratch - try the finer ones first?
I also find they work well with WD40 which helps the waste to wipe off.
Fine Wet &Dry (say 600) works well with WD40 too.

Cheers for that. I bought the 3-pack to experiment - and I've also got a number of old planes laying around that I ought to clean up some time...

120g Abranet/Camillea oil seems to work quite well.

Apart from anything else I really have to clean up our kettle.

Got the bill today - £500 as promised. Yes, a result!
Amazing how it changes everything, opening up close to the house. I wish I'd done it years ago.

Now I've just got to get to grips with a 100' conifer looming over the house in France...

Sorry to hear about your planes, Smudger :( If you'll pardon the pun, it never rains but it pours, eh?
I found a very small hole in the roof of my workshop, but thank fully all that was below it was floor so as far as I can tell, no harm done.

Hope the planes clean up alright.

Damn bad luck Smudger, i went to check my shed today and i
have a leak too, i looked on the roof and could'nt see any sign
of a hole so i got the steps to get a closer look and, the bloody cat
has been using the roof as a scratching pad the little black & white
b*****d :x , now i'm planning revenge
As if that was'nt enough i was up during the night as usual because
of pain, and around 1/2 past 4 i decided to try and get some sleep.
So i went into the kitchen for a drink and the security light came
on, the cat was outside so i opened the door and let it in, closed the door
and locked it, turned to go to bed and there it was, A BLOODY MOUSE,
it took me 10 minutes to get the cat and the mouse out the bleeding
door, did i mention i'm planning revenge on the cat

Sounds expensive...

This is what's left of the tree:

Looks like my leak was just highlighted by the storm, it's probably ivy that's lifted the felt. Being fixed next week.

This is the least-affected plane:

Tis a right bummer when this sort of thing happens. I had similar last winter, fixed up several planes and got them looking good and working well; put them away in the tool cupboard, which used to be on the wall but I've since moved it, went to use them some weeks later and they all looked just like yours does. Checked the wall and it was running with damp??? Never did find out where it got in. Grrrrrrrrrrrrr

Ed - thanks for the tip about the Garryflex blocks, they have worked a treat, though on some I had to use a buffing wheel on a Dremel first. No problems using the coarse one, some planes are now shinier than they have ever been before. Some staining on the soles, but nothing serious.
Lots of sharpening to do now...

Can you clean the Garryflexes?
