Naphtha ?

I have read that before painting / varnishing after sanding to remove dust after brushing / vacuum to use Naphtha on a cloth to wipe down. Could you a advise on what naphtha product to buy and type of cloth used?

I'd just use meths. Some sources may use naptha to describe what we in the UK might call white spirit. Naptha is basically light hydrocarbon distillate.

Re. cloth - almost anything that won't generate too much lint would be fine - an old cotton T shirt or some other woven cotton.

I thought Naptha was now classed as carcinogenic. I have about 1 pint left from my late father who's mate "acquired" it on request from the Dunlop factory that used to be in Liverpool. Fantastic stuff for cleaning paint brushes.

Wood dust and particulates from cooking are also carcinogenic. Just don't drink naptha (separately, I'd imagine that if naptha is carcinogenic, it's due to something else that comes along with it unintentionally, like benzene).

NIH here has a blurb that petroleum solvents weren't found to be carcinogenic, but comment about contaminants stands - if following the NIH comments, one has to have pure petroleum solvents that don't have carcinogenic contaminants.

Best stuff in Wales used to be Brains SA - aka 'Skull Attack'. Never used one myself, an ancient propane lighter for me..... packed it all in 48 years ago.

it is here, and always has been. When something didn't come undone when I was a kid, we busted out the lighter fluid refill container (as in something with adhesive on it - like labels and price tags). The stuff for lighters may not have been that pure ( A CAS spec is given for rossinol fluid sold here, or however they spell it, though, so it's probably not that bad).

We were too busy sprinkling lead paint chips in our soup to worry about naptha when i was a kid. The only real concern was not burning the house down, as that would've had a more immediate effect.

My mate collects the old fairground lamps that used to run on Naptha.

Standard tach cloth for the dust, and isopropanol alcohol
(IPA) to degrease, try to get 99% IPA, plenty cheap on amazon.

Quick note on IPA: only use in well ventilated spaces or outdoors and try to avoid inhaling the fumes - you can get a seriously unpleasant pounding headache. Not nice at all.

Use a hand scraper to do the finish rather than sanding. No dust to remove. And no solvents.

Back in the day, they used it as anaesthetic in animal surgery. It had nasty side effects and was discontinued.

IPA (iso propyl alcohol) is easily and freely available. It is the main ingredient of hand sanitiser!

Back at the beginning when I was worried about Covid I used it for sanitising, the good thing is it dried really quickly and didn’t make my skin peel.
