Hi Chems, nice to know I've inspired you to make the bench top. I scraped my tops before I cut them just in case there were any metal lurking. Check them carefully before you put them through the planer as I missed a staple.

Hey Shultzy, yeah you inspired me completely! Its nice to know when your doing a job its doable cause someone else has done it. Interestingly I didn't pay any attention to your measurements before I started chopping, but after I had I've come out with the same measurements, 7 boards per top with a tin waste off cut, and cut 1 board from each lot into 6 inch strips to extend the work top. I thought that was interesting this afternoon when I was reading your thread very carefully.

Did yours have the groove on the underside, I'm planning to take this off with the Mitre saw and think I will lose around 2inches per board from doing so.

As for the staples, my blades are completely knackered since I hit a screw last week so I'm going to kill them off with this an order a new pair, they are only £20 for me so not as hefty as your £40. I tried to plane the gum off, which worked fine but ruined the plane so much so that I had to spend a while re-grinding the base. Have you got anymore pictures of yours on the go?

Hi Chems, yes I cut mine into 7, I set my fence at 3 1/4 for the widths and 7 3/4 for the short lengths. I'm glad you remembered to cut one of the seven into short lengths as not all the boards are the same thickness :D . My tops didn't have the grooves but I would glue them so that the all the imperfections are on the bottom and trim the ends when you have finished the glue up. I removed the gum with a chisel and scraper as I noticed that some of it was still soft. No more pics yet as I have to order the beech for the sides.

I've got a bit further today, I have manged to mix up the different tops. Ive planed all of them on 2 sides and some on 3, I intend to match the thickness up again and plan out the grooves. Then glue up 10 for a 10 inch batch and put them through the thicknesser and then glue them all up. Adding the little extra bits is going to be a bit difficult I think!
