Hi fellas.

An uncle donated his Record woodworking vice to me. It was a bit stiff but full working order, except it was full of oil and dust, I took it apart  to free it. And put it back together as I thought it was.... now it doesn't work and it has... wait for it..... fallen apart.....

Anyone got any ideas?

Steve,

You do need to give us a bit more information before anyone can answer your question.

Which model of vice do you have? What has fallen apart, the screw mechanism, a casting?

although dave is right, sounds like you have put the locking/guide stuff back in the wrong way.

might be worth checking any sources of record to get a decent parts drawing.

Sounds like "quick release issues"; always easy to get wrong.

I only fixed this problem

(note date: July 2001)

a couple of months ago. It turns out that the small casting/forging in which the quick release rod runs, despite being very similar to the equivalent part in a Record vise, is actually fitted upside down compare to the Record. Annoying, the Woden part can be fitted either way up, and looks "moderately happy". It just doesn't work.

Having worked on many Record vices, I simply assembled as per Record, and the damn thing didn't work.

The previous owner had done the same ](*,)

The only thing that saved me was restoring another Woden vice, which did operate nicely. A quick "compare and contrast" and a 6 year old puzzle was solved!
