How do you stop a banjo player from drowning?

Take your foot off his neck.

(I also used to play a bit of banjo until I (some may say mercifully) chopped the tendon in my left index finger...

Best way to silence a banjo-player?

Put a sheet of music on the music-stand. 8)
Ho ho.
Actually that'd be true of a lot of amateur would-be musicians especially guitarists and Irish diddly-da folkies.

Was actually doing banjo scale practice a minute ago - working my way around the circle of fifths as you do.
Sight reading is essential unless you just want to be a chord thumper.
Before that I was warming up with Tarrega et al, on guitar - sight reading again!

That's another repurposed guitarist joke...

Has to be said, though, that polyphonic plucked stringed instruments are much harder to read for than keyboards or monphonic wind/brass instruments.

My post wasn't meant as a slight towards you Jacob. Just a reworked old joke, usually applied to guitarists.

The only disadvantage I have from not being able to play on sight, from music, (I can read it.) Is that I can't play anything unless I know 'how it goes'. However, my knowledge of harmony is such that generally, if I know a tune, I can play it. And not just thump the chords. Also, an accomplished accompanist is rarely out of work! The saxophonists (et al) of the world see to that!

Cheers, and enjoy the cycle; it keeps coming around in so many old standards!

A man walks up to a bar in a small village in africa. "The drums keep going" he moans "day and night now for four days. I cant take any more. When will they stop?"

"You dont want them to stop" says the barman "believe me".

"Why not? They are driving me mad"

"Because then the bass** solo starts"
