I've watched one of Magma lathe videos of Rolly Munro using his tool.
He starts with the old version, which is the one I have, and then switches to one with the current design. This looks much better as it appears to be symmetrical and can cut in both directions. It also looks to be smaller, so easier to fit through small openings.

Has anyone tried both versions? How do they compare? Is it so much better that it's worth getting the new head?

I've contacted a couple of suppliers to ask about buying just the new head. The one reply I've had said it wasn't possible and I'd have to spend a minimum of £173

You can't buy just the head. The reason I've been given is that it's the most expensive part and makes up the majority of the cost of the tool. Whether it's really that expensive is anoher matter. I'm fairly sure that if they sold it by itself they'd put such a high price tag on it that nobody would buy it. Lets face it, the handle and shaft aren't really the amazing part of the tool.

Duncan.
The only person i know with both versions is Mark Hancock.
Might be worth pm-ing him if he doesn't see the post here.

It's a heck of a price for a tool with a singular purpose. Hollowing.£21 at Axminster.

I assume you're referring to £21 tool at Axminster. Which one?

When I bought my munro tool the price wasn't as high as it is now and it was also at a show discount. Yes, you can hollow for a cheaper price especially if you can make toothpick hollowers. However, I prefer the munro to all other hollowers I've tried in terms of speed of cut, smoothness of finish, depth of cut setting, ease of sharpening.
I do quite a bit of hollowing and wouldn't be without the munro, even though I often use it, toothpick hollowers and deep hollowing scrapers on the same project.

Dave - I figured that was the case.

Thanks

Just seen the thread and as Dave says I do have all versions of the Munro hollowers. The simply answer is yes. The modified head, being symmetrical, makes it more versatile and also easier to fit through small openings although I wouldn't say it's a smaller head.
