For what I make accuracy to the nearest mm works fine and that's about the same as I get from standard callipers
Sorry Duncan what i meant was does the gap stay the same at the opening point, with it being springy type steel.

How you getting on with the Munro :?:

Just thought I'd update - the video where I learnt the wire depth gauge technique is ...

'Hollow Turning'
by David Ellsworth

he makes it very clear how to use the technique

I am a bit surprised that none of you mentioned a laser pointer. Saves a lot of stopping the lathe and turning it back on again.

Thanks for that George.

how are you getting on with melvyn?
At the moment George i have given up trying to watch them.I have tried about four times now and each time have been disturbed by one thing or another. But from what i have seen looks really good.
I like the bowl turners boogie :D

Robo - I considered a laser pointer but I usually hollow with a hand held Munro tool rather than a captive system. Would a pointer work with a hand held tool? I always assumed not.
I regularly stop the lathe to remove shavings anyway so measuring thickness isn't too much extra hassle.

I have used a pointer with a hand held system. It works, but is a bit bulky. Personally, I like a captured and/or articualted system. Much less labor and the laser is not a hastle.

Hi Paul
Sorry I'm a bit late in the day, talking about bent wire calipers I made myself some simple calipers from this web site www.turningtools.co.uk look under Widgets/gizmos the author Brian Clifford made these years ago and still uses them, I find they suit my purpose ok I made mine from stainless steel rod used on industrial boilers for water level probes.
