I have just acquired and started a refurb on a brute of a cast iron manual mortise machine produced in Newport Wales by W. A. Baker, I stripped it before I thought about photos. I am guessing it is late 1880's as they became motorised shortly after that. Despite having stood outside in the rain for more than a year and nothing moving I have managed to strip it and free off almost all of it all ready and am sure the rest will be ok so a bit more easing off before repainting and reassembly I have one chisel in it, not sure how it comes out, I assume it just taps out (eventually) but before I start on that will get some photos and hope someone can direct me, the photo is of a similar model, mine is a lot more rusty, ha ha.

the machine came with only one chisel, a 5/16. I wonder who has some of these tucked away in the dark corners of the workshop if so I would be interested in buying them. The machine will end up in Animal rescue centre workshop where I'll use it to make/ repair field gates and cages etc, it keeps me out of mischief, ha ha.

well it is all in bits and since these photos were taken has been wire brushed and everything freed up. I then gave it all one coat of Hammerite. (Buckingham green much nicer than the original blue/grey) Next job is to assemble and give it a second coat where needed as well as sorting the holidays caused by painting in a dark workshop, (battery needs charging for the lights) but no worries wood burner kept it cosy despite being freezing outside, a simple de-rust, paint and reassemble with minimal grease. the way it is built it would be easy to add a motor and square chisel if I find it too hard work with the simple lever, time will tell.
