Hi,

I am in the market for a morticer and whilst in work today I noticed that we had the Rexon SM-16A morticer in clearance. (I work in B&Q). does any body have this mortiser and if so what do they think of it? I have a rexon lathe and it is good quality

I've never bought anything by Rexon but have always assumed them to be a cheap generic Chinese brand of low quality.

But maybe I've just assumed that because they are stocked by B&Q! :lol:

My mate has the rexon and it's Ok. The fence is good although a could be a little wider. The biggest let down is the depth stop which isn't up to the job and either deflects in the best case scenario or bends at the worst. It retails at £199 which is way too much. For the same money you can get the Jet JBM-5 or theit next model up for a fiver more which IMO is asignificantly better machine. Many will swear by the 5/8 inch model Fox sold by Rutlands which is a regular in their sales section and when it is goes for around £130. I guess it all depend on how much B&Q are selling it for.

I have it and find it pretty good. Only really used it for one job:

But with a replacement decent chisel (and the correct bush free from Rexon) is was well up to the job.

Mine has been excellent though I have modded it by milling the fence dead flat and adding a couple of new fixing positions for the Bristol levers that secure it. These are further forward and help remove any flex in the fence.
Mine is by Axminster but is the same model just painted white.
