tulsk aka John seems to have won the wood recognition competition - what I thought was oak may well turn out to be elm - thanks John!
From its shape and bark, I had assumed oak - there was no leaf to help identify, but there is a replica tree on the other side of the cottage which had literally half a dozen leaves surviving on the otherwise dead branches and they are definately elm, so I expect the tree which I'm working on will be the same.
I went up again this weekend and liberated a few more burrs but will now hire or borrow a chainsaw and see if I can take some of the larger pieces which I hope you can see in the pictures.
One question - there are some worm hole evident - is woodworm likely to be a 'live' problem and, if so, what precautions should i take?
I've included some pics which my partner took with her camera, so the quality will hopefully be better.
Another question - can I put my pictures directly onto this page witout having to direct users to my blog site?
Ta... :?

Hi Colin definitely Elm now you've posted further pics. You've certainly hit the jackpot there! You ought to have a go at carving a few walking stick handles- nothing looks finer than Burr Elm. As for the woodworm I always give pieces a damn good flooding with treater before bringing into the workshop. Good luck with your carving mate. John

Thanks for the heads up John - good call!
Got some woodworm treatment so will do some soaking...
