If you've got holes the wood worm has flown. An old cabinet maker told me that 9 times out of 10 if you can see the holes then the damage is done. The problem is in the destruction that has been caused as they mine their way out. If you are turning and the damage is too bad it simply falls apart on you. So far the only time this has happened to me was with a reclaimed mahogany door frame which went to powder once I got past the first 1/2" of wood when turning. I wouldn't store wormy wood with other wood knowingly but if it's being turned then you shopuld be safe.

I'm sure someone will come along with either a better explanation or a rebuttal.

Very nice, professional looking, contemporary and unique work. Love the spalted beech vessel. Obviously a very experienced and creative turner/artisan.

How did you make sure the woodworm was dead so you didn't get new holes appearing later on in the piece?

Would spinning at 2k rpm not kill them off ?

Nope, they are persistent little beggars, as are a lot of other wood species beetles who are quite happy to poke there heads out and grin at you half way through a job. Although I have used Grahams method of chilling their ardour in the past, and they do seem to have turned up their toes when encountered later, I don't know how effective it is with any undeveloped eggs in the wood.

Nor does it kill woodlice, earwigs, snails, beetles of various species, spiders or earthworms.

All the above have been found in bits of wood I have recycled and have survived. The earthworm was in fact only 1/2 an earthworm when I found it and was still alive. :(
