First three of a set of five, all cut from the same piece of elm, still not sure if I will do the five or not.
I know I do a lot of horses, but they do work well with the scroll saw :D

Very nice Gill. I am impressed. The Elm sets them off beautifully and I feel this is one of the problems with many projects, matching the design to the right type of wood and this case the Elm was a perfect choice, especially the way you have encompassed the grain with the design. May I ask where you got the patterns Gill, I would like to have a go at those.

Lovely work Gill. I'm not a big horse fan but those would really tempt me (WHEN I get my new saw).

Please forgive my ignorance, but are the small black lines scroll saw cuts or "just" pyrography?

They are lovely Gill and the Elm has great grain, I haven't used any Elm is it fairly tough to cut?

Brian, don't have much experience with different types of wood, until last year I was mainly using B&Q pine and hobbies woods, but am fortunate enough at the moment that I can go and rake around in a wood shed and pick up what appeals to me, there is usually lots of elm, some ash and some oak cut into rough planks and offcuts. I love the elm because it is easy to cut and so variable, I have pieces that are 'standard' elm colour, some darker and some very pale, that could be ash, until I find some burrs through it, and then I'm not so sure. Grain varies from smooth to swirly to having lots of little burrs through it, and sometimes green or purple streaks - can you tell I like elm?
Anyway, to answer your question, yes I find elm easy to cut, haven't really found anything yet that is difficult, although oak is very hard wood and definitely needs taped to stop burning with fine blades
