Because they don't want the hassle of packing and sending something or simply don't know how to arange for delivery of a large item such as a machine

Generally I agree with you, however I am in that situation with a router. It's not worth much and since it's heavy the cost of shipping will probably be close to what anyone is prepared to pay thus increasing the cost to the buyer. I paid £15 for it, collected it myself. If I could get £15 for it I'd be happy but shipping will be about £10 I would say and it's not worth £25. Even if someone was prepared to pay £25, I really can't be bothered to pack the machine and take it to the PO or wherever for £15. But other examples are different of course

It's a good reason to buy Lie Nielsen tools (same applies to Festool). If you decide woodwork's not for you you'll get most of your money back, where as anything spent on Anant or Rutlands tat is money you'll never see again. If you think of woodwork costs in the same way as car costs, i.e. the biggest element is depreciation, then you'd never buy anything else.

I agree, particularly when it comes to quality used machinery like Wadkin and so on, as long as you look after them, you can't go far wrong. You'll lose a bit more on Festool I'd say, but certainly not what you'd lose on a black and decker, proportionally speaking.

I sometimes wonder whether the highest bidder is actually connected to the seller. Looking at the winning bidder's history, 37% of his bids were with this particular seller. I find it hard to believe that someone buying a band saw wouldn't have done a bit a market research and know what the new price is, because it is not a normal impulse purchase item.

I'd guess that they didn't check the Axminster site on the day it finished. The price is normally £1499, but this weekend it's on a 'Black Friday' price.

Your post made me laugh and shake my head in equal measure David.

I too am a frequenter of the Bay, and many a time have I questioned folks' reasoning. It's like they automatically think if it's on eBay, then it must be a bargain. I understand getting into a bidding war over discontinued classics, or an antique or a tool that doesn't come up for sale very often, but for something you can still buy - I just don't get it. I'd rather pay an extra £15 or £20 for a new tool.

There was a previous post about sites selling second hand or antique tools - they too can be as bad if you don't do your homework. Now I know the owners of the site have to spend their time tracking down second hand or antique tools, they maintain their site, they photograph them, they package them etc etc, and have to cover costs and make some cash. But you regularily see second hand Lie Nielsen tools for example, selling for more than they go for brand new.

I would've thought listing a second hand tool for more than you would pay for it new, would be a terrible business model, but folk seem to buy it. Or it wouldn't be listed for that price..............would it??

I would let the guy off with charging P&P as I wouldn't expect him to compete with Axi's free P&P over £50 sales, but there's making money and then just ripping stupid people off. Oh yeh, I've just answered my own question!.

SwwE5WVZ3D A Hammer A3 41 nearly new for £5500 compared with this http://www.felder.at/files/2014/11/hamm ... gb_eng.pdf the same machine new for £2634 admitedley without the spiral cutter block which I can't find a price for right now but they don't cost 3 grand (if I remember rightly they're around the £500 mark).
