With our first batch of boxes already on display at Ambleside Garden Centre in Earlswood, my son amd I are busy making a second batch, with about 10 on the go to be finished off.

I cannot decide on the following blocks, between upright, for a more 'modern' look, or horizontal for a more conventional look. What would you say?

The idea was to follow up on a couple of earlier boxes, which were a little like Book-Ends - These...

Excellent! they look great and personally i love the bookend style...... you could maybe incorporate an embedded clock? I was talking to someone in a craft venue and they said people had said they like stuff to be useful aswell as decorative, the boxes are already useful for jewellery but add a clock and they look at it all the time...... you should easily sell them anyway.
Cheers
Brian
ps do you glue lots of different bits of wood together to get the multi colour effect? i did some recently but have been waiting until my bandsaw arrives (this Thursday) to try cutting it. I stuck 2 sheets of different coloured wood together with double sided tape and cut loads of wiggly lines and then seperated them and glued alternate colours to get a marbled effect, if it works it might look ok?

Hi Brian, pleased you like them.

The blocks are done just the way you are doing. The only problem I had was that the thickness of the different woods varied and it was a real pain getting the glueing right. Inevetibly there were a few gaps, bigger in the first set than this latest one, but using glue and the approipriate coloured fine sawdust, the filling matched up. I really need a thicknesser/planer to deal with the timber I buy.

I had thought of the clock after seeing some at one of the shows, but have not tried it yet. Possibly a plan/Stan.

All the best

Alex

A useful tip ........ get a set of plastic files/tubes with stoppers and keep various coloured sawdust readily available. I also use a set of those tubes to keep scrollsaw blades in.
