I made this box last year simply because I wondered how easy it was to actually put together. The answer is "not very" if you use wood thicker than a couple of mm. Today I decided to paint it and put a slot in it to make it into money box for my O/H's nephew's little 'un.

The models are kits that I bought to do over winter a couple of years ago, then I borrowed a scroll saw and they got put to the back of the cupboard. I decided to finally do something with them over the last week while it is cold and damp in the garage.

The link at the bottom is to a little video of a wooden beam engine I put together, powered by a small electric motor. The eagle eyed might notice a couple of link arms are missing, but it runs Ok without them

I love the colours on the money box Martin. I also like the models, takes me back a few years when I would spend months building various models. Talking of models my son sent me an e-mail with a picture of a 6ft radio controlled submarine and underneath he had written, "Guess what I want for Christmas."

I hate having to paint things, Geoff. I have a half a dozen of the cheaper Airfix kits and they will all be the same colour grey that they arrived as. I got these from The Works discount book shop. They are skill level 1, which is about 1 above my skill level. :p

Martin.

Love the beam engine, I have always intended to make one out of metal, which would also give my lathe a bit of use.
As coming from the home of the beam engine.

I was born and brought up in a village called St. Newlyn East, the mine there was East Wheal Rose, that mine had the biggest beam engine that Harveys of Hayle, Cornwall, built.

My great grandfather on my dads side was a tin miner.
Take care.

Very interesting, Chris, I just spent an hour reading about the mine. In a nutshell, in 1846, a one hour long storm flooded the mine and killed 39 men. The 55 ton beam, beam engine, with enormous 9ft piston stroke, was fitted in 1882 and the mine closed 3 years later.

Martin.

Just to add to that info, the flood happened on a Sunday morning during the church service.

The ground rises all around the shaft site, so with the cloud burst on the Sunday morning, there was no chance that the pump could cope, a very sad time for a small village.

The high ground behind the mine is now populated with electric generating wind turbines, personally I would prefer the mine waste tips, after all it was one of my childhood playgrounds.

Take care.
