Here's a little conundram for y'all. I'm making a mitred frame for a table top. I currently do not own any mitre clamps and I don't wish to buy any at this point in time, so therefore is there a way to make up some kind of clamping mechanism or clamping jig for this kind of task?

Secondly, I've also got to make a mitre box to cut the mitres with, is there a trick or handy technique to makesure that the saw-guide slots are accurate to 45? Or is it just a case of careful sawing, and then relying on a mitre attachment to the shooting board to clean up any inaccuracies?

Your thoughts gratefully received.

Tony, you're a star!!

Thats exactly what I was after! I need to brush up on my googling skills because i've been searching for a while!

Cheers!

Glad you found them useful.

I seem to have a growing web library of things that I have found/stumbled across and thought what a good idea - will save the link. If there is a secret in this case it is to search for miter as well as mitre - strange spellings in the US (color rather than colour) :D

Cheers :D

When I made this

I used a set of these

to clamp it.

LN - I did look at those, and will probably invest in one in the future, but at the moment there are no pennies in the chest to spend so I'll probably make up those clamping blocks..

Noel - thank you for the link, i'll take a read over breakfast :)

Easy to make some temporary sash cramps with boards say 4x1" with blocks, or pegs or just nails at the ends, with wedges between them and the workpiece. 2 on top 2 below.
Mitreing plain boards you don't need a mitre block - just saw to the marks and tidy up with a mitreing shooting board if you have one, or without if not.
Mitre blocks best for mouldings etc where you can't easily draw a line, of for compound angles where you tilt the picture frame whatever at one angle and cut at 45deg.

cheers

This is one I use on some mitres.

Put the mitres in a line ( end to end ). with them touching each other.
Put some masking tape on the outside, so that the mitres are held to gether .

You can then put glue on the mitres and just roll the frame up, the mitres should now all be tight together with some tape on the last one.

That should hold them till the glue dries.

I hope that is clear.

I picked up a band clamp at the local market a couple of years ago for a fiver. Works as well (I actually prefer the corner supports) as my £20+ Bessey!!

Cheers fella's, some great idea's and solutions there. I'll have a think over the coming days and pick a method, i'll report back as to the level of success :)
