Hi Gareth,

Thanks for your replies to my question here and regarding cordless circular saws.

I read an engineering paper on noise generated by woodworking saws. They concluded that while there are ways to reduce the noise generated by the blades and sawing operations by using good blades by 2 to (i think) 8 decibels, unfortunately, there is nothing a user can do if the motor is noisy.

regards,
Kee

Gareth, Kee, thank you or the info.

Although I haven't found a Fox yet I have tried the Bosch GCM12SD which is another great machine. I like the idea of the side extensions sitting directly on the work bench.

Cheers

Mike

Sorry Mike I should have added that Makita actually did stop Fox producing that particular model. It was only on the market for a few months a couple years back now.

PS I be particularly interested if you find a model with an accurate depth stop that is real easy to swing in and out of work e.g. for halving and tenons.

cheers,

Ike

Beejay,

In the end I did go for the Dewalt DW718V, as opposed to the 718, the "V" meaning it has got a factory fitted laser as standard.

What a saw, its a big beast, yet as you say it has got a very short travel. One thing that struck me the minute I turned it on is how much quieter it is then the one I tried in London when I was down there.

Anyway I will do a review when I have used it for a few weeks.

Cheers

Mike

Would be interested in hearing more about the DW718 Mike when you have used it a bit more.

Trying to work out a compelling reason as to why I just have to get one so that I can justify to senior management !

Had a play with one in B&Q today coincidentally (only came out with a bit of plywood and some screws though ! ), and was impressed by the compact size vs the length of cut.

Did discern some slight side to side flexing though when at the end of its travel I thought and would be interested if you find the same or whether it is insignificant in practice ?

The Makita LS1013 also there seemed more solid in that respect but is plain ugly to look at and doesn't have the same capacities so would prefer the DW as long as it's accurate.

Found a number of sellers on ebay doing the DW at around £525/£540 compared to £600 to £700 elsewhere, so massive savings apparently available with a bit of shopping around.

Sorry if I've hijacked the thread a bit !

Cheers, Paul. :D

Hi Paul,

I will give it a few weeks and then write a review.

Paul,

Did discern some slight side to side flexing though when at the end of its travel I thought and would be interested if you find the same or whether it is insignificant in practice ?

No there is no flexing in mine. It might just be a one off machine at B&Q.

Paul,

Found a number of sellers on ebay doing the DW at around £525/£540 compared to £600 to £700 elsewhere, so massive savings apparently available with a bit of shopping around.

£525/540 are very good deals, the nearest that I can fine is £479, but depending on where you live their pxp can be expensive. http://www.xpressconstruction.com/produ ... d=241&dt=0

At these prices you can afford to buy some of the extra's and still get a better deal then some dealers that are selling the standard saws

You have really got to watch what you are doing if you come across dea;ers like this;

Surely no one would pay £858 for what is again the standard saw?

Cheers

Mike

Hi Mike,
Just picked up again on your progress with the SCMS and was delighted to see you opted for the DeWalt. I look forward to your review after youve given it a good workout. Your comments on noise and dust collection under normal use would be greately appreciated.
regards, beejay
