The Metabo DH330 thicknesser was going to be my preferred choice until I read the Thicknesser/Planer thread where the DeWalt is the top choice.

Can anyone shed any light on the main differences between the two?

I have two immediate projects that I require a thicknesser for; 1) To make a blanket box from a cot and 2) To make an outdoor box from an iroko garden table that has been damaged beyondrepair.

Thanks

HI
I don't have experience of the matabo but I have had the 733 for 7 or 8 years now and it takes anything that i feed into it!
I rip stock on the bandsaw, put it through the thicknesser then cut it to length on the RAS.
It does everything i ask of it.
It's a noisy so an so and dust collection could be better but at the end of the day its the finish that's important :D

Hi TheDudester

Can I also throw the Makita 2012NB thicknesser into the pot?

It's about the same price as the DW but, in the US, it has won all of the recent awards for standalone thicknesser.

I would highly recommend it.

Cheers

Thanks for the responses so far.

I had not considered the Makita but at around 6kgs less in weight than the DeWalt and 8kgs less than the Metabo, this woild certainly make moving it around much easier and even allow me to store it in a cupboard out of the way.

After a bit of searching I noticed that locking the cutter is a key feature to reduce sniping. On the DeWalt this is manual and on the Makita this is automatic when the wood touches the first roller.

Has anyone any comments to make about the sniping issue with regards to these two products?

I can buy either the DeWalt or the Makita from two local suppliers for only a few pounds difference between each model and will contact them tomorrow.

Thanks again

Not sure what your situation is regarding workshop space but for me the thicknesser is in constant use. I have it set up on its own wheeled tabe
at the correct height so weight is not a factor for me.
I can say that the 733 is heavy!! but that contributes to its solid feel.

What's snipe? Yes, it really works.

There are a quite few of us with the Mak, hopefully somebody else will quote their experience.

Thanks for the responses again.

Looks like I'll be looking to buy the Makita tomorrow.

Will let you know.

Well, I called around my local suppliers and best price obtained was £336.56 for the Makita without stand and £351.24 with stand.

One supplier did quote £100 more! I didn't attempt to negotiate.

Another supplier suggested a Metabo HC260C (same as the Elektra Beckum HC260M?) for £469 delivered next day including an additional set of knives free as I have bought a number of items from them.

I have to admit that the idea of a dual/purpose machine didn't generally appeal and the Metabo is around 50kgs heavier, but for only around £120 more I could have both functions.

Hmmm decisions, decisions.

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks

To make your life easier - Honestly :p

Look at this one ebay link

This is the best machine you can buy

Its a planner thicknesser and its dewalt and watch it, this one is complete with the mortising attachement (that is very rare!!!!)

I have this one, and its indistructable and you probably get this one for about GBp200,- but its very very heavy

AND if needed all parts are still available from dewalt

This one is in perfect condition (I whish my one was looking that beautifull)

Well the choice is up to you, but i know what to go for

Oh and this is not mine

Yesterday, I placed an order for the Makita 2012NB thicknesser.

I should receive it by Tuesday next week.

I've been reading about a slope in various posts. is there a brake!

Regards
