Matty sent me a PM t'other day and asked me to do a marking knife for him, I finished it yesterday:

Handle is in African Blackwood, blade is carbon steel (ex-Chisel bandsaw blade) polished with upteen coats of blonde shellac and then given an application of wax polish this morning.
Trouble is, I made two of them...I wonder what I can do with the second one? - Rob

My Knife arrived today. It's fab!

It's beautifully made and almost looks to good to use. I can highly reccomend

In case any of you were concerned about the fate of Rob's second knife - don't fret - it's gone to a good home - mine!

It looks lovely, and the handle feels just right. Can't wait to use it on my next project.

Les :D

Rob

Those are really great looking knives. I would love to have a go at making one.

I am fairly sure that I can do the handle but the blade, not a chance. Is it possible that you have some pictures showing how the blades are made, or do you make a stock of them and use when necessary? How do you cut a blade shape piece from a section of bandsaw blade? And then fix it in? Most things to do with metal are beyond me.

Bob (who may just end up becoming a customer)

Bob - Chisel kindly let me have some pieces of used 25mm wide high carbon steel bandsaw blade, which as luck would have it, are the same thickness as the HSS blade in my hacksaw. I cut off two strips (enough for two knives) 8mm wide and 75mm long. These are then filed and polished down to 1200g using w/d papers. I then harden and temper one end and that end is then ground to the correct angle and taper on the Tormek. The blade is then cut to the right length after which it's finally polished with some Jewellers Rouge and the felt wheel on my Proxxon mini drill...it's a long, protracted and messy business, but worth it in the end - Rob

Rob,

I think you might be the one to ask...

I it wise to make my own buffing wheel?

I though of capturing some discs of felt, or canvas, between two discs of metal, and chuck them in my lathe. I have a 'scratch-awl' partly made that needs a proper polish and I ought to finish it!

TIA,

:)

Morning John - can't see any reason why that sort of arrangement ought not to work. I polished earlier knives on the leather wheel of the Tormek - Rob

I take it you can put these polishing mops in a drill press?

Hi Rob,

Thanks for that. Not that I am mean or anything, because mops and wheels seem to be reasonably priced. I just have the stuff about the shop and am looking for uses! I already have a Tormek. The buffing wheel has never been used! It's a thought.

For Wizer,

I reckon you could use a drill press, but you might need some kind of 'splash-screen'. Some polishing compounds spray a bit. Bad enough in the lathe, but mounted horizontaly I reckon the fall-out area would be much wider! :D
