I'm making some shelves for a customer, they like the look of the shelf in the link below, anyone got any tips on achieving this look?

The shelves will be Redwood, I will distress them a bit and I presume the final finish will probably be some coloured wax, it's really can anyone recommend a stain to use to save me buying loads of samples!

My instinctive reaction was it looks like a dark oak finish over pine but that's just a guess.

To me it looks like a stain with a coat of water based satin varnish on top, I can't imagine they would use anything other than something quick and easy to apply.

It looks to have quite blackish overtones to it so @Jake could well be pretty close. I have always found Walnut coloured stains to be pretty useful for this type of look.

I would hazard a guess it's medium or dark brown wax applied straight on with no sanding sealer after the softwood has been sanded to either 120 or 180 grit beforehand.
Either way that would achieve a similar finish for the customer.
