Turning MDF into gold in a northern town
Our central heating system at home is powered by a Baxi Bermuda back boiler. It works well and is very efficient; the downside is that we have this horrible gas fire on show in our dining room.

We never turn the fire on, but can't get rid of it as it is an intergral part of the boiler.

Anyway, this Sunday morning I had a bright idea. I also had exactly three hours before her indoors had to go to work, leaving me in charge of Dan junior.

I made it back from the workshop with a few minutes to spare. The second coat of lacquer was still a bit tacky though!

It is purely cosmetic; a box of veneered MDF with false door frames glued and pinned on.

But what a difference it makes!

SWMBO was ecstatic!

Cheers
Dan

That looks great - Nice work

Just one question though... Where does the fire have it's air intake? You need to make sure it has sufficient airflow or the carbon monoxide won't get exhausted properly.

As Fecn has pointed out, you have blocked off the air flow to the back boiler, this means incomplete combustion will take place producing carbon monoxide, a LETHAL killer, this contravenes the current gas regs and should be modified immediately, I would suggest removing the door panels and replacing with a decorative mesh, but not too fine as they soon clog up, I don't mean to frighten you but please get it done pronto.
regards,
Rich.
ps. don't forget the annual service on the appliance.

That could be BLOODY dangerous. Nice looking job mind, but for God's sake put a decent sized vent into it.
Depending on the output of the boiler the necessary air volume could be quite considerable.
On my father-in-laws set up the installers even fitted a box vent into the lounge outer wall to ensure sufficient airflow into the room.

Dan - nice job, but I have to agree with all the previous comments...this one needs to be altered smartish  - Rob

Unless externally vented a Bermuda will draw its air for combustion of the boiler from the room, leaving the fire turned off will not alter that I'm afraid.

That is a brilliant piece of work Dan and all done in three hours  I am afraid I have to agree with the others though that you have blocked the air intake to the boiler. I would have been inclined to make a dumy radiator type of cover which would give plenty of airflow for the boiler. Very nice work though.
