This is a pic of a wedged marking gauge (made some time ago) now residing at Phillyplanes using a masonry nail set on the diagonal:

shows how a standard rosewood gauge from Axminster has been modified by tilting the stem (the top of the stem has been planed) so it locks (leather washer under the screw as well) when tightened. It's also been fitted with a diagonal pin ground to a blade profile - Rob
