Just been to Maplins and picked up the 4 controls plus remote set which is on offer for £19.99. Store posters said £30 reduced from £40 but online new price is £19.99 and that is what came up at the till.

Also for curiosity I bought the power usage meter adaptor thing which was also just reduced to £15

Just plugged the planer thicknesser into it. Display flashed up 4000W during startup  then settled to 700W on no load

I bought the power mtr couple of months back to see how our usage worked out as we have high elec bills. What is fascinating is that it has supported my theory that much of this "Save the planet, You are wasting money having things on standby" is absolutle claptrap.

My TV, hifi and video all use aboslute negilable amounts of energy on standby.

We did some calculations and (from memory here now) if we were to switch of everytghing including the washing machine at night, we would save the grand sum of about £7 per year. Now, the energy used during startup from cold on our TV worked out at MORE than that per year.

Utter tripe. Just an excuse to raise taxes.

Sorry, rant over bit off topic there

I bought a very similar set from Aldi a couple of days ago. £16 IIRC. I can switch on my DX from the other side of the workshop now, great!

After writing a What are you doing Maplins? report about Maplins, I made quick visit and came back with an amazing buy.
It was for a Vellem ultrasonic range finder kit (nothing special) but I brought it for £2.95 when it should have been £29.95, thats right a full 90% off. I almost brought 2 of them but I'm still not sure what I what I'm going to do with it.
Anybody else get a bargain???[/url]

Hi, I was thinking of getting some of these, also for running my extractor but with the no-volt release switch, how can the extractor be turned on remotely when you still have to go and press the on switch for the extractor itself?

cheers,
jon.

Jon with a no volt release in circuit you can't. I am not really sure you need a no volt release on an extractor but if you were to bypass or replace with a 13 Amp plug and use one of the remote sockets, they work as a no volt release in the sense that if power fails they won't turn on when restored as far as I know but I haven't actually tested one. I use the Aldi ones and they really have made life a lot easier.

After reading this Ihad a quick pop to their site and they had 16" fans down from 49.99 to 9.99. Just what I wanted, and I have a store just a few minutes drive away.

They also had large aluminium flight cases in, with foam inserts, at 29.99. I might go back and get one for my camera stuff.

Before you do, have at look at the roofbox website, at their Peli or B&W cases. they have some good bargains there (click on bargains at the top of the homepage and then navigate). More expensive than Maplin, but rather better IMHO.

So is it OK to turn on a motor directly from the plug socket? The extractor I have is an Axminster ADE 2200, which means i'd have to bypass the on/off switch. It has to be noted though that the no-volt switch has a dial inside it to set the motor's rated amperage with and i'm not sure if I should be by-passing this! Any info would be welcome.
cheers,
jon.

Jon if the "appliance" is rated as a 13 amp suitable i.e. can be connected into an ordinary ring main and not a higher rated dedicated 16Amp connexion then you most certainly bypass or fit a plug and switch from the ring main.Where there may be a problem is on the start up current which in theory could overload these remote switching sockets ..as far as i know nobody has had this problem.

Thanks for your info Alan. The extractor has the standard 13 amp plug fitted but the motor is a 2 horse power and I was a little worried of it possibly tripping the breaker on start up.
