Hi I've bought the Makita plunge saw a couple of months ago with the 48 tooth blade supplied with it but I need a blade more suitable for ripping. Makita make a 28 tooth blade which is ok but it's £27 - £30. The makita blades blades are 165mm x 20mm bore with a 2.2mm kerf. I was thinking about using an alternitive blade is it has the same dimensions - I have seen cordless circular saw blades which have the right diameter and bore but the kerf are slightly different. Would this affect the rubber strip along the edge of the guide rails?

Thanks, Mark

I think it probably would, as the kerf is a function of the carbide tips on the blade. I suspect that if you use a blade with, say, a 2.4mm kerf it would cut 0.1mm from the rubber strip. This may or may not be important to you, but it would be to me as the whole point of track saws is the accuracy of lining the edge of the strip up with your cut line.

Mark I dont think you will find one much cheaper. I use a Festool TS55 and just got a new 48 tooth blade on Saturday for £37.50 + vat I dont mind paying that for their blades as I know they are worth it. I think their 28 tooth blades are around £30.

There is a company called Dart who make cheaper blades for Festool saws which should also fit your Makita and you might find Freud make one suitable.

EDIT just remembered I have a spare 28 tooth Festool blade used for one cut so still as new really I think it would fit your saw you can have it for £20.

Hi chippy - I really appreciate the offer, however the Festool blades are 160mm so would reduce the depth of cut I need too much for the old bench top I'm cutting up (2 1/16 inch thick)

Thanks, Mark

I'm sure Doug at cutting solutions can sort you out with blades for both the Festool or the Makita to suit your needs.

Hi Mark

I would stick to either the Makita or the Dewalt ones which also fit.

I have a Makita blade in my Dewalt saw at the moment.

I have tried other blades in the past and run into problems with the kerf thickness, the Maktia blades are good enough that you can get them sharpened.

Tom

As long as you select the correct kerf on your replacement blade then any manufacturers blade will suit if it is of the correct other dimensions.
There are many suitable blades for these machines and some will offer advantages over others including those of the machien manufacturer, as please remember they don't make these things themselves!
