Makita collets.

Guys I’ve just bought myself the Makita RT0700CX4 trim router. I’m wanting to try my hand at making signs, possibly usin 1/8“ cnc bits. Can anybody tell me please if I buy an insert to go into the supplied 1/4” collet if so which one as there seems to be loads of them. I’m a novice diy'er.

Are you making very small signs to warrant the use of small 1/8 CNC bits? I've always used a standard V or U shaped cutter, varying the depth of cut to give the required letter width.

Here's a house sign I free handed using the same trim router with a 1/4 Vee bit.

The Vee bits cam from Wealden. The engraving bits have 3 cutting edges are are easier to control and give a great finish but are expensive. I've also used the standard V groove cutter which works almost as well but is much cheaper, so a good starting point. The 90 degree angle is also good.

The 60 degree cutter is good if you're doing smaller letters.
