This is the vase I was working on when I was chased out by wasp....
It's made from elm with ash overlay. The elm has lovely streaks of green through it, but for some reason that piece of wood is difficult to finish - I had this problem before with a box I was making that also had green through it, has anyone met this before? Sanding sealer was an absolute must, think it could do with another coat of wax maybe?
Got a few more celtic designs and different vase ideas swirling around, and am just starting another celtic vase, this time in ash with fretwork patterns, fingers crossed it works

Really like this, well done.I have a load of white oak planks that have been unable to decide what to use them for--- your piece has given me loads of ideas
Many thanks

John

Thanks John, love it when I get a run of ideas, just a pity I have to go out to day job tomorrow :(

@gilljc:

That's a lovely looking vase, thanks for showing. Please forgive my ignorant questions (once again!):

1. is that a vase for cut flowers (i.e. will it hold water?) or is it only for dried flowers? If "wet" how do you waterproof the inside please?

2. By how much does the ash "overlay" stand out proud of the main body of the vase itself? Is it inlaid at all, or "just" stuck on to the vase? If stuck on, with what glue please?

TIA

AES

P.S. Sorry to keep asking all these dumb questions but within the next couple of weeks I've got a brand new saw coming (not sure yet if Hegner or Excalibur - it's my birthday) and seeing the stuff some of you post in this section is filling my head with all sorts of ideas (re technique, NOT seeking to copy the designs of others).

Hi AES
Thanks for asking :)
1: the vase will not hold water, though I suppose you could waterproof a vase by careful use of resin, have thought about that, would be expensive and a bit messy though...
Did once get a flower arrangement in a little basket that was lined with a plastic bag, so that is an option

2: the ash overlay protrudes about 4mm because that is as thin as my planer/thicknesser goes. It is not inlaid at all because I was too lazy  do have a couple in my head for double bevel inlay, and just done one with resin inlay, but not sure if I'm happy with the colour :( .
It is stuck on with water resistant wood glue and clamped up in a home made bowl press (finish applied afterwards or it may not have stuck!)
Afraid all of my ideas come from trawling the internet for images as I have no artistic ability whatsoever

Whatever saw you get I am sure you will get a lot of enjoyment from it :D

PS I find a lot of good images on searches for silhouettes, tattoos, stencils and stained glass patterns
