My own personal rule of thumb is then to quote on the basis of £250 per day. In my business this breaks down as £50 for materials, £40 for overheads, and £160 for me. You wil be able to work out your own requirements.

When you say materials, do you mean consumables rather than actual wood?

I don't generally ask for a budget, but I soon find out whether I'm within it by looking at their faces when I give them a 'ball park' figure.

Ah, the well known 'chair' test!

My mistake, Rog...

I didn't realise that you meant to use actual wood!

My rule of thumb assumes the use of veneered MDF with wood lippings. It means that I am working on a margin of 80%. Over the last year my gross margin came out at 81% - proof that my apparantly haphazard costing method actually works.

For the odd job I do that calls for solid wood I simply add 10-20% on to the price. This more than covers the extra cost of materials.

Either way the vast bulk of the sales price of any piece of furniture reflects the labour input rather than the cost of the wood and fittings.

Cheers
Brad
