Hi

Can anyone tell me if there is a mailorder router bit sharpening service?

I'm in Northern Ireland but anywhere in the UK would be great.

Many Thanks

Ian

It's not whether they offer it - it's what they use to do it. Like everywhere else I doubt there's a fellow painstakingly sharpening saws by hand for £7 a pop. It's remiss of me though; I keep meaning to check them out but they're just far enough away to be awkward. :(

Cheers, Alf

Hi Alf

We don't get many hand or tenon saws in for sharpening these days as most people seem to use the hard point saws, but the ones that we do get in then I still sharpen the majority of them by hand - did use the automatic machine in half term when a local school sent in 50 tenon saws that looked as if they had been used as hammers - only 4 had all the teeth left!!

By the time that you set the machine up then it can be faster to sharpen by hand anyway.

Hi Ian, in that case I'm moved to ask who are "we"? :D And where is this glorious time capsule where schools still have real saws (albeit abused)? Just when I thought the world was irretrievably slipping into the abyss, a glimmer of hope. I feel better for hearing of it. :D

Hi Alf - sorry, work for a small company in South Wales called Dragon Saws Ltd.
There's still a few schools and colleges around our area that still use real saws - only about 3 or 4 now though but still nice to know that some schools and colleges are still using them.
They tend to send them in once a year during half term - condition on some of them has to be seen to be believed so I tend to have to re-cut most of them.
One college has quite a few Disston's but they are very well looked after :D

Cheers, Ian

Ian,

A quick browse (search) on this site might help you gauge demand - I think there might be one, as we are always moaning about the demise of saw doctors.
Do you have a WWW
Have you thought of running a saw sharpening teach in?

I for one would like to see this "machine" to recut teeth

Hopefully you have just found yourself a whole new client base.
