Hi my teenage grandson has just completed his first term at collage on a foundation woodworking course. I am delighted that he is doing very well and is exceptionally keen, so apart from supplying him with good hand tools, I was thinking of a years subscription to a woodwork magazine, but my question would be which one, for a lad just starting out in the craft. Any suggestions please, nothing too advanced he ca move into those later.

Unfortunately magazines are a dying item, many now extinct. Practical Woodworking I have not seen for years, so too Woodturning magazines. WH Smith used to be the place to look at and buy magazines, but nowadays there are hardly any and difficult to find hidden away at the back of the shop. There is so much info available online that youngsters don’t buy magazines anymore.
Regards

I think a good course of action is to sign him up to ukw and he will have far better information than any magazine can provide . Woodworking magazines are hard to find and although a good source of information they are limited in terms of projects especially for a beginner. Let’s say he sees a project in a magazine he likes the look of and wants to give it a go - it’s unlikely he will be able to contact the maker if he needs help or advice but here he probably will be able to message the member directly and get advice from the person who made the item ..

Great to have another youngster joining our trade, I would suggest Woodworking Crafts Magazine, you can subscribe.

You can buy a digital subscription for him to Furniture and Cabinetmaking (tends to be focussed on UK fine furniture makers) or Fine Woodworking (more oriented to the US woodworkers). The latter gives access to their site with extra material and is probably the one I would favour. The projects are covered clearly and in good depth - although the measurements are imperial.

I think it’s a great way to encourage and support him.

I would just allow room for his own enthusiasm and skills to do some of the work. I love fine woodworking and it has super technical articles it can also be repetitive, American, furniture basrd, and at times really silly.(I recall an article about building a houseful of doors.....using biscuit joints.....really.)
Seemingly every issue builds a crosscut sled. But the good articles are really good.

I had a subscription to Fine Woodworking and I would recommend it. If you go for the unlimited subscription he would have digital access to every back issue they have published. If he has a tablet of some sort, that alone would give him hours of happy browsing

I would also say Fine Woodworking and it's the only magazine I've kept old back copies of and if you do subscribe I think he would find the digital version of most use. But just a thought, I often see people offering old copies of most magazines either free or for a nominal amount, if you can find any then they will be far more useful and interesting to him than the current offerings.
Maybe a wanted ad on here might offer some possibilities.
