I recently bought one (brand new £200) & wondered about the tilting fence, I have searched the web & can only see a little picture & a price. I wondered if anyone who has one could tell me if it is worth it & if there is anywhere that has more detailed information about it & a decent picture.
The fence it comes with is fixed & therefore only the first couple of inches of the blade gets used when planning, I realise I should use the other part of the blade when thicknessing, but I really don't use the thicknesser that much, what have people adapted to get round this, different thicknesses of timber attached to the metal fence?

wayne, i have one, and i paid more, although some time ago.
mafell are good products, well engineered and built.
the rise and fall of the thicknesser has a plastic handle which is replaceable
their idea being that a plastic handle is cheaper to replace than four metal pillars.

i have never had a problem with the short straight fence, and have actually put some really long lengths, 9ft or more through without any problems. in fact the major problem is moving the plastic safety fence across to allow the wood through.

i have the tilt fence, although i have not used it, it seems ok, but i would i think tend to use a shooting board/mitre board for hand finishing.

it is designed as a professional machine and will run for quite some time without getting overloaded, but only take thin cuts. i would tend to stick with 0.5mm or less, multiple passes. don't forget that the blades are reversible, but not designed for re-sharpening. i would tend to think that the re-setting would be more complex.

when thicknessing you need to be careful about keeping the pillars clean and clear of chippings and resin. i use a compressor to blow out. use a dry lube on this.

you could check out the MAFELL web site for photos, and also hit NMA agencies for their details too. they also have parts lists etc.

at that price, are you sure that it is the mafell, not the cheapskate that nma have now started selling??? that retails at about 200 quid.

Oh come on, if my avatar wasn't allowed surely someone can't have a name like that, wheres the justice in the world
Nice one WAYNE

Yep, definatelly Mafell AD160, I reckon I got a great bargain as I have seen them priced at over £500, My local tool mart had it lying around for ages & I reckon they just wanted shot of it.
Had a look on NMA site, not great pictures, I'm still not sure how it adapts/works, also, I'm not sure what you mean by "shooting board/mitre board for hand finishing. " could you explain a bit more.

well if it is a mafell, then you are a lucky guy.

try the mafell site in germany then for photos.

a shooting board is what you need to guide a hand plane after sorting the initial surface on a machine.

check the hand tools area for recent postings about shooting boards and mitre boards.
