No, not to help me get out of bed in the morning... ;)

The BRM being the BRM, the tail stock and banjo are heavy and a little hard to slide along the bed. Now I've fiddled with the nuts (ooeer) and I think they are set right. It appears to just be the sheer weight of them that makes them hard to shift. On the Woodfast I used a flat board with some wet and dry paper to clean up the beds and makes things smoother. Is this an OK practice or is there something else I can do to get things gliding.

I had a little play on the BRM when Mike was selling it Tom,and i remember how everything on it moved easily, especially the tailstock, and cross slide,as i was having those problems with mine on the Hegner at the time.
So it can be set up right.
I gave mine a good clean the other week when i turned that Oak vessel.
The bed was black.
I just used WD40 to get the tannin off using some wire wool, than i used my old oily rag to clean that off,Then a clean rag.Now it glides nicely again.
EDIT-:
Forgot to say Tom.I was always using me Palm sander on the Hegner bed, with a fine grit and oil,and don't forget to do the underside of the cross slide.

I use Liberon lubricating wax on my Hegner at the end of every sesion, since doing this I have found the headstock and banjo move easilly and it also protects the bed from spilt sealer etc.

If it does need cleaning I use 1200 wet and dry and 3 in 1 oil to clean up then give it a good wipe down and a coat of liberon.

Always Oil my lathe bed and rub down with 0000 Steel Wool.. keeps everything slip-sliding away, as Paul Simon said

Some folk hate the thought of oil near the machine,... Don't throw it on from 12 yards away, and its fine.

I don't know that lathe Wiz, but I use spray Slick50 on the bars on my Record CL1 and just spray it on a cloth and wipe it on. After that I can slide the tool rest from one end to the other with a push.

It nearly caught me out the first time when I just pinched up the tool rest 'as normal'. It moved quite a bit and frightened the life out of me. I was OK though after a change of trousers, a sit down and a coupel of beers  :?

Try cleaning up the bed with coarse Nyweb and WD40.
Wipe off resultant yuk, apply Liberon lubricating wax or Woodwax 22.

Then next time you need to do it remind yourself that you should have done it after the last time you splashed sealer or finishing oil everywhere.

Alternate is PTFE Dry Lube, but that's a somewhat more expensive option if needed often.

thanks guys. I'm having a corset fitted tomorrow, so I'll give this a go on Weds.

Excellent Chas, I love it !

Tom.. all the best with the treatment... anything that helps and lets you get more time on Big Red has got to be worth a try.
Hope you get some success. 8)

Now I really wish I was going to the brummie bash....

Seriously Tom. Back trouble is a real downer in many ways so I hope this is something that works for you.

Pete

thanks chaps, don't really know what to expect. Soon find out ;)

I keep a GarryFlex abrasive block (http://www.axminster.co.uk/product-Garr ... -20009.htm) in 60 grit beside the lathe - and rub it on the bed and toolrest when things don't slide nicely. I also smear a little Woodwax 22 on the bed, then polish it off after using the block.

Garryflex abrasive blocks are great on metal - and they seem to last almost forever. Great for removing rust marks left after green turning, black marks left when turning oak, minor nicks in the toolrest, and polishing of old tools after you have wirebrushed off all the rust.

I've just remembered that Proops also sell them a bit cheaper than Axminster do - and in more grits.

(I have no connection whatever with the manufacturers of Garryflex blocks, BTW)

some chaps like to use vaseline on the bed , and indeed arround the nuts ;)......

....but i find that the dust sticks to it - imo a bit of whatever wax you are using on the work is the best application - plus i use oooo wire woool to clean up the bed about once a week
