Low friction plastic

Hi Does anyone know where I can buy low friction plastic for runners for a cross cut sled please?

What you need is UHMWPE (Ultra High Molecular Weight Polyethelene), it's so low friction that it's almost impossible to stick it to anything, glues just peel off. The only sure way to secure it to anything is to screw into/through it.

Great stuff though, I used to use it a lot when designing bakery equipment. Dough sticks to most things, but not UHMWPE.:twisted:

It's the same stuff Axminster sell, but now that you know what it's called, I'm sure that you'll be able to source it locally and/or cheaper than axminster.

Contact adhesive works great with this kind of plastic.

YOu can buy UHMW in self adhesive tape or sheet form in thicknesses from a few thou to over 1/8in, and in variable degrees of stickiness.

I've bought it at CS Hyde a few times, their service has been excellent: http://cshyde.thomasnet.com/viewitems/t ... &forward=1

They do a gazillion other polymers in all sorts of forms too if you dig around the site.

Just looked at Direct Plastics Loz and the 6mm sheet UHMWPE is 3 times more expensive than Axminster :shock: :shock:
However the choice is staggering at Direct Plastics.

Don't forget, Axminster are really only selling thin off-cut strips and not full meter or half meter sheets. They do seem a bit steep when compared, though.

PTFE is also a vey usefull alternative.

Many years ago I was branch manager for one of the big main distributors so i have a background in semi finished and engineering plastics.

If you look in your local yellow pages you'll probably find at least one distributor within reach. They will have a range of products and will be happy to advise you and supply tech info if you need it. There will be various sheet sizes and thickness available and if not in stock locally, will ship it from another branch.

They'll offer you at full list but should be able to get at least 20 - 25% discount and they'll cut the sheet fro ==or you is needs be.

Look under "plasts shhet / semi finished / enineering plastics distributors.
largest Uk company is Amari Plastics = try google for info!
