Was trawling ebay and saw this guy selling a bit of a treasure chest of old tools, nothing unusual except that the bids are already in the hundreds. Had a look through the details and pics and the condition of all items is quite poor, with a healthy dose of surface rust at least. However, he does describe having an old Stanley No 7, a Stanley 0113 and a plane he calls a Morris of London.....

You can picture the collector drool in the questions already asked

Yes that's a very tempting selection box!

I wonder how many people are mentally adding up the individual pieces and thinking that several hundred pounds would still be a bargain?

No questions yet on the highly desirable 1970s Surform!

Not a bad price for that little treasure chest.Although I don't think I'd find myself buying it. I have too many tools as it is!

Just had a pleasurable evening in front of the telly dismantling and cleaning a Record 5 1/2 ebay purchase, definitely not a collector tool this one (I estimate 5% japanning intact!). Blade, chipbreaker and cap iron will require a little work on the stones to get it in good order, but once done will become the workhorse benchplane

This is true, though I think I'll put it to use first before thinking about prettying it up, may never get round to that part. Incidentally I assume there are easier ways of cleaning up a mucky/rusty surface than wire wool?

WD40 helps immensely.

I find a good brass wire brush is easiest for removing superficial rust without damaging the surface.

Nothing wrong with restoring an old work horse for a new life in my garage. Makes a pleasant change from cleaning all the mud and crap off my bike - which does still need doing....

Old nothing. My old garage roof leaked and all of my tools rusted. I needed to restore a 6 month old plane...
